Get ready for World Thinking Day 2010!
8 September 2009
This year’s theme, girls worldwide say “together we can end extreme poverty and hunger”, ties in directly with the new Global Action Theme (GAT). This, in turn, is linked to the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), in particular MDG1, which is concerned with ‘Eradicating Poverty and Hunger’.
WAGGGS aims to fight against global poverty and hunger by educating and empowering young girls and women all over the world to take action, be better leaders and achieve their potential as active global citizens.
Take action!
We have developed a wide range of activity ideas, fundraising examples and information on the theme for you to explore in order to celebrate WTD and earn a WTD badge. The World Thinking Day website already includes all these resources and will be updated constantly - so keep an eye on it! WAGGGS encourages all Girl Guide/Girl Scout members to Stand Up Against Poverty on World Food Day - 16 October - in order to launch their World Thinking Day plans. Find out more on the Campaigns section of the World Thinking Day website.
Spread the word!
Getting involved in WTD is a lot of fun and for more than 50 years it has also been an important fundraising opportunity for WAGGGS. The WTD Fund is used to support the work of our Member Organizations, to carry out projects and advocacy campaigns and to sponsor young delegates at international events such as the UN Commission on the Status of Women.
For the first time, WTD is focusing on five countries, one from each region: Haiti, Zimbabwe, Sudan (pictured left), Georgia and the Maldives. WAGGGS hopes to raise their profile and make girls and young women from around the world more aware of the issues that people living in underdeveloped places face. Each of the five countries will receive a grant from the WTD Fund for a project that will enable them to offer more opportunities to girls and young women so that Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting can do even more to challenge poverty.
