"welcome to the newest member of the Europe Region WAGGGS"

The Association of Guides of Romania (AGGR) is the newest full member of the Europe Region WAGGGS, being accepted into full membership at the World Conference of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts in Jordan in June 2005.

Although Girl Guiding did exist in Romania in the 1930s, activities stopped and contact was lost following the outbreak of the Second World War. Guiding began again in 1989, following the changes in the political situation in Romania. With the support of the Greek Guide Association, a group of friends interested in giving service to the community formed a committee to start Girl Guiding once again, and the Association formally came into being in 1991. In 1995, AGGR formed a partnership with the Swiss Guide and Scout Movement, who wanted to help AGGR become a full member by 2005 - and with their support this aim has now been achieved.

During the last 10 years, AGGR has been developing a new educational programme, a training scheme for adult leaders, and worked to improve the image of Guiding in Romanian society. Through Girl Guiding/Girl Scouting in Romania, members of AGGR learn about respecting themselves, their family, society and the environment and how to live and work together in friendship and service. The Association’s activities are wide-ranging: participating in programmes organised by the UN, working with other youth NGOs; organizing camps for their members and providing activities or other support for the elderly or institutionalized and refugee children.

It is wonderful to have an opportunity to learn new things and to share your own ones with Girl Guides, who have similar interests in life.
