Development of the movement:
Guiding was first introduced to Malta in 1918 when companies of British Guides were formed. In 1923 some Maltese girls became Guides and formed a separate division; the two divisions merged in 1938 to form a single body, the Malta Girl Guides Association, although there were still companies of British Guides. Malta gained independence in 1964 and Guiding activities continued to gain strength.
In 1974 Malta became a republic and four years later the British Guides companies left the island. The Association changed its name in 1984 to become the Girl Guides Association – Malta.
The Association is open to girls of every class, race, religion and nationality. It has a good relationship with the Scouts. Guides with special needs are encouraged to join local groups. In 1985 a pre-Brownie Programme known as the Dolphin Guide Programme was launched. The aim of the programme is ‘Socialisation through play’.
Programme:
The eight-point programme gives the girls the opportunity to realize the aims of the Association; these are the development of character, self-training and service for
others, based on spiritual and moral values according to the principles embodied in the Promise and Law.
The programme fosters a love of country and promotes a full sense of citizenship by developing an interest in home-craft, health, social service, love of nature and the traditional arts and customs.
The Association is in the process of implementing a new localised programme based on the eight point programme for all the sections.
Relationship to society:
Service plays an important part in the programme. During the Second World War, the Association was awarded the Bronze Cross in recognition of the courage and endurance displayed by the Guides in Malta during the War, especially during the period of intense enemy activity.
Members give service in children’s homes and old people’s homes. Guiders also donate blood to the Blood Bank. Members participate in fundraising activities for charities and Badge Days, namely the Poppy Day Fund, Playing Field Association, Society for the Protection of Animals, Diabetics Cancer Fund, and contributing towards the Charity Community Chest Fund under the auspices of the President of Malta and his wife, the latter being the Patron of the Association.
Guides are involved in various projects related to the environment and children’s rights.
Communication and Co-operation
The international aspect of Girl Guiding is encouraged through international projects especially on World Thinking Day, through pen-friendship, exchange visits and attendance at international camps and seminars. A twinning project with an American Council resulted in setting up an Island Library for members. Guides attend regularly at church parades, the annual May Parade and on state occasions. The Association takes part in Thinking Day on the Air.
Training:
To offer a better and effective service to the members a Training Panel was set up in 1968 to conduct leadership training, including camp training which is organized at district and national levels. Since 1998 a national convention is held every year for all guiders, young leaders and rangers. This is the platform for the yearly training programme. At present, the Association is developing a training scheme with the introduction of specialised courses.
Outdoor and Environmental Activities
Guides often meet together at Island Rallies, camps and pack holidays. The focus at camps is frequently placed on nature study and respect for the countryside in order to encourage environmental awareness. The Association also organizes ecology courses and sea sports rallies for its members.
